INDIA – Sun cream, underpants, travel money…Typically these are some items you may pack into your suitcase when you are heading away for a relaxing holiday. For one man in India he decided to pack a little over 10,000 turtles into his suitcase for his travels.
The question, “Did you pack this bag yourself?” certainly springs to mind but we are not sure what his reply to that one would have been.
Customs officials discovered the sea turtles in the suitcase when they stopped to men at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport in Kolkata. Somehow both of the men managed to get the bag through security inspections in China before arousing suspicion in India as they were waiting for their bag to arrive in the reclaim hall.
An official said: ’10,043 numbers of exotic varieties of the turtles have been seized from two passengers, residents of Chennai, who were coming from China to Singapore, and landed at Kolkata airport.’
Sea turtles are endangered species due to the fact that their numbers are decreasing as there is in increase in pollution and thus a loss of their natural habitat to live in.
They are also targeted by poachers for their eggs, meat, skin and shells.
What do you guys think about this? What should happen to the smugglers? Is there much hope for the sea turtles? Let us know in the comments below.
